Cash Flow Calculator
Profit is not cash. Enter your opening balance, the money actually received and the money actually paid in the period to see your closing balance and net cash flow.
When the period burns cash, the calculator also shows how many months your balance lasts at that rate.
Collections from customers, refunds, loans received.
Purchases, salaries, rent, EMIs, GST payments.
Cash flow summary
- Opening balance
- ₹2,00,000.00
- Cash in
- ₹4,50,000.00
- Cash out
- ₹5,20,000.00
- Net cash burn
- -₹70,000.00
- Closing balance
- ₹1,30,000.00
- Runway at this burn
- 1.86 months
Formula
Net cash flow = Cash in − Cash out
Closing balance = Opening balance + Net cash flow
Runway = Closing balance ÷ Monthly burn
Only count money that moved. Unpaid invoices and unbilled work belong in receivables, not cash flow.
Worked example
Opening ₹2,00,000, collections ₹4,50,000 and payments ₹5,20,000 leave a ₹70,000 burn and a ₹1,30,000 closing balance — under two months of runway.
How to use this calculator
- 1Enter your expected cash inflows for the month — collections, advances, other income.
- 2Enter cash outflows — purchases, salaries, rent, EMIs, tax payments.
- 3Read the net cash flow and closing position for the month.
When businesses use it
- Seeing whether a slow-paying customer will cause a shortfall next month.
- Planning a large stock purchase around your salary and rent dates.
- Deciding when there is enough surplus to prepay a loan.
Why profitable businesses run out of money
Profit is recorded when an invoice is raised; cash arrives when the customer actually pays. In a business selling on 45- or 60-day credit while paying suppliers in 15 days and salaries on the first of the month, every rupee of growth widens that gap. This is why a growing, profitable business can miss payroll — the profit exists, it is simply sitting in receivables and stock.
The working capital cycle explains the size of the gap: days of stock held, plus days customers take to pay, minus days you take to pay suppliers. A cycle of 70 days means roughly ten weeks of operating cost must be funded before the money comes back. Shortening any of the three components frees cash faster than chasing extra sales.
Runway is the other number to watch. If the period burned cash, dividing the closing balance by the monthly burn tells you how many months remain at that rate. Anything under three months calls for action on collections or costs now rather than at the end of the quarter.
Practical ways to free up cash
- Invoice on the day of delivery instead of at month end.
- Ask for an advance on custom or made-to-order work.
- Follow up receivables at 7, 15 and 30 days rather than waiting for the due date.
- Negotiate supplier terms to match the credit you give customers.
