Formula

PF = Basic × 12%

Net pay = Gross − PF − Professional tax − Income tax − Other deductions

Basic pay is usually 40–50% of gross. Professional tax is a state levy, commonly ₹200 per month.

Worked example

A ₹60,000 gross salary with basic at 50% has ₹3,600 PF and ₹200 professional tax, giving ₹56,200 net per month.

When businesses use it

  • Preparing a monthly payroll sheet for a small team.
  • Answering a candidate's question about net pay before they join.
  • Checking a payslip where the net credited amount looks wrong.

Reading a payslip line by line

A monthly payslip has two sides. Earnings list basic pay, house rent allowance, conveyance, special allowance and any bonus; deductions list provident fund, professional tax, income tax and anything specific to the employer such as canteen or transport recovery. Gross minus deductions is the net pay credited to the bank.

Basic pay drives most of the arithmetic. Provident fund is 12% of basic plus dearness allowance, gratuity accrues on basic, and HRA exemption is capped with reference to basic. Employers typically set basic at 40–50% of gross; a very low basic raises take-home today but shrinks retirement savings and gratuity later.

Professional tax is a state levy, not a central one. Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal and Tamil Nadu among others charge up to ₹200 a month, while Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh charge nothing at all — which is why the same gross salary yields slightly different net pay in different cities.

Deductions employees often question

  • Employee PF at 12% of basic, matched separately by the employer as part of CTC.
  • Professional tax, which varies by state and is often ₹200 a month.
  • TDS on salary, spread evenly across the year based on the declared regime.
  • ESI at 0.75% of gross where the wage is within the coverage limit.

Learn the maths behind it

  • CTC vs take-home salary

CTC includes employer PF, gratuity and benefits. Take-home is gross pay minus PF, professional tax and TDS.
