Take-home = gross salary − PF − professional tax − income tax − other deductions.

Formula

Total deductions = PF + Professional tax + Income tax + Other deductions

Monthly take-home = (Gross − Total deductions) ÷ 12

PF here is 12% of basic pay. Add employer-specific deductions such as canteen or transport under other deductions.

Worked example

A ₹9,00,000 gross with basic at 50% has ₹54,000 PF, ₹2,400 professional tax and ₹35,000 income tax, leaving about ₹67,383 per month.

When businesses use it

  • Budgeting your monthly expenses against actual credited salary.
  • Checking the effect of a raise on in-hand pay rather than CTC.
  • Verifying deductions on a payslip before raising it with HR.

Planning around your monthly in-hand pay

Take-home pay is the figure that actually funds your rent, EMIs and savings, and it is what lenders use when they assess how much you can borrow. Working it out from the annual package prevents the common mistake of budgeting against a CTC that includes employer contributions and annual bonuses you will not see monthly.

The tax regime is the biggest single lever. The new regime offers lower slab rates with almost no deductions, while the old regime keeps higher rates but allows HRA exemption, section 80C investments, home loan interest and medical insurance. Salaried people with a home loan and full 80C usage often still gain from the old regime; those without significant deductions almost always take home more under the new one.

Declare investments at the start of the financial year rather than in January. TDS is spread evenly across twelve months based on your declaration, so a late declaration means heavy deduction early in the year and an uncomfortable wait for the refund after filing.

Levers that change take-home pay

  • Choosing the tax regime that fits your actual deductions, reviewed each April.
  • Claiming HRA exemption with rent receipts and the landlord's PAN above ₹1 lakh a year.
  • Stopping voluntary PF contributions above the statutory minimum.
  • Restructuring allowances such as LTA or meal cards where the employer permits it.

Learn the maths behind it

  • CTC vs take-home salary

CTC includes employer PF, gratuity and benefits. Take-home is gross pay minus PF, professional tax and TDS.
